Pratola Serra is situated on the hills along the right bank of the Sabato River, 918 feet above sea level.
The comune was established in 1812 by merging the two villages of Pratola and Serra.
Serra is the oldest part, and developed on a hill around a medieval castle, while the residential Pratola
rose along an ancient road (today province road 371) connecting the area of Avellino to Puglia.

The population in 2018 was about 3800. The town's Patron Saint is Madonna Addolorata celebrated on the 1st Sunday in September.
