Salvatore Lanzaro Birth Extract

In August of 1999, I wrote to the state civil office in Castellammare di Stabia asking for the birth record of Salvatore Lanzaro. The response was the document below, an estratto or extract of the original document. In other words, someone from their office transcribed limited information from the original document. They would not send me a copy of the original. Salvatore was born on January 1, 1874. His parents were Giuseppe Lanzaro and Petronilla Bonifacio. I have long assumed that the person extracting the information spelled the surname as Lanzaro instead of Lanzara becuase that is how I spelled my name.

Thanks to the Mormon Family History Center in Utah and their FamilySearch.org website, I now have a copy of the original document. This solves the question regarding the spelling of the surname. Scroll down below the Estratto to view it.

"Nascita" is Italian for birth. "Gen" is abbreviation for Gennaio, or January.
The actual document, below, is the recording of births for the town of Castellammare di Stabia.





Name of child above is "Salvatore Lanzaro" (not Lanzara!!)
This is definitive proof that the Lanzara's changed the surname to Lanzaro while still in Italy.

In the enlargement below, all I can make out is "Giuseppe Lanzaro fu Diodato". This is Salvatore's father.
The fu Diodato means Giuseppe's father was Diodato (Lanzaro) (1800-1864). The "fu" means he is deceased.

Below that is "Petronilla Bonifacio di Catello". This is Salvatore's mother, whose father was Catello (Bonifacio) (1820-1901), still living.
