CAUSES OF DEATH

Line

Isaac Winans
born December 27, 1850 in Rahway, New Jersey
died December 26, 1929, in Freneau, NJ, age 78 years.

Father: Jonathan Dayton Winans
Mother: Sarah Patterson

Cause of death: Myocarditis

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). It resembles a heart attack but coronary arteries are not blocked. It is most often due to infection by common viruses. The consequences of myocarditis vary widely. It can cause a mild disease without any symptoms that resolves itself, or it may cause chest pain, heart failure, or sudden death. Isaac's death certificate states he suffered from the disease for four years.

In addition, he also had a Cardiac Dilatation the day before he died. This was a condition where the size of the heart cavity becomes enlarged and stretches, thinning out the heart muscle (myocardium). Causes of this enlargement include heart muscle inflammation, prior heart attack, and long-term alcohol abuse.

Isaac also suffered from Arterial Sclerosis, a condition that occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to the organs and tissues. Healthy arteries are flexible and elastic, but over time, the walls in the arteries can harden, a condition commonly called "hardening of the arteries".

Isaac died one day before his 79th birthday.
