CAUSES OF DEATH

Line

Salvatore DeGennaro
born August 5, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY
died August 2, 1923, at 498 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, age 11 months, 27 days

Father: Louis DeGennaro (1890-1977)
Mother: Anna Lanzaro (1889-1977)

Cause of death: Broncho Pneumonia

Bronchopneumonia (Bronchial Pneumonia) is caused by bacteria invading the lungs, leading to inflammation of the bronchial tubes causing fluid to build up, thus reducing the amount of air that can be maintained in the lungs. The patient suffers from severe coughing and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include chest pain, rapid breathing, and shortness of breath. Fever, sweats, a headache, and weakness are also usually present.

Salvatore's death certificate lists Pyelitis as a contributory factor in his death. Pyelitis is an inflammation of the renal pelvis (the outer basin-like portion of the kidney at the attachment of the ureter), often accompanied by symptoms such as pain and tenderness in the loins, irritability of the bladder, bloody or purulent urine, and a peculiar pain on flexion of the thigh.

Salvatore died in his home at 498 Flatbush Avenue in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn known as Pigtown. This was just a few blocks from Ebbetts Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, about 2 miles from his home.
