44 Atlantic Avenue
Tax Photo Circa 1940
This was the home of Frank and Elizabeth Lanzaro and their children, John, Mary, Anna and Jim. The family lived in an apartment above a barbershop where Frank worked as a barber.
He was providing a satisfactory income for his wife and four children when he died suddenly on January 6, 1892, leaving Elizabeth with baby Jim, 4-year old Anna, 5-year old Mary, and 10-year old John to survive on their own.
If you look closely at the photo, you can see what appears to be a barber pole in front of the shop. Still there after 50 years.
Between 1939 and 1941, New York City photographed every building in the five boroughs for tax purposes. This photo of the building at 44 Atlantic Avenue is
from that collection.
