34 Mulberry Street in New York City
This is where Michele and Laura DeMartino and their sons Frank and Fred were living after they arrived in America in 1902.
Their tiny apartment was above a bank. Although this photo was taken around 1940, it's possible this is what it looked like in 1902.
In 1928, the bank was converted into a funeral home owned by Charles Bacigalupo, to handle the needs of the growing Italian community of Little Italy.
Francis Ford Coppola filmed scenes for "The Godfather" here in 1970. By 1977, the area was populated by mostly Chinese-Americans and the funeral home became the Ng Fook Funeral Home.
Between 1939 and 1941, New York City photographed every building in the five boroughs for tax purposes. This photo of the building at 34 Mulberry Street is
from that collection.
